AtkinsRéalis Role:

AtkinsRéalis Dublin office was commissioned by Sligo Borough Council to carry out various engineering services for the proposed Western Distributor road.

Sligo city has generally developed in the north-south direction along the N4/N51 Corridor and to the West. To facilitate future development of the large undeveloped land to the West and Southwest of Sligo, and to relieve existing traffic congestion, the new road is proposed.

The proposed Western Distributor road was included in the Development Plan since 1971. AtkinsRéalis carried out constraints study and route selection study to identify the 5 different routes feasible along the Western Distributor corridor. Out of 5 routes one route was preferred for environmental, economical and traffic etc reasons.

The preferred route of Western Distributor road starts from Caltragh Interchange and heads in westerly direction along agricultural lands (zoned for Development). The route passes over the Sligo-Dublin railway line before crossing the Oakfield road and then turns to a northwest direction. It then crosses the Ballydoogan road at grade before entering the Kevinsfort and Kevinsfort Heath residential Estates. The route ties into the Strandhill road at First Sea Road.

We held the public consultations during the Constraints Study, Route Selection and Preliminary Design stage to address the concerns of the public and also the media and local pressure groups.

AtkinsRéalis proposed 10.5m wide carriageway with central hatching and 1.5m grass verges, 2m cycles lanes and 2m footways on either side of centreline for the section
