Minister of Transport Shane Ross at Sod Turning for Western Distributor Road Phase 2

On the 22nd of February 2019 the Minister of Transport Shane Ross attended the Turning of the Sod Ceremony for Western Distributor Road Phase 2 project.

AtkinsRéalis are delighted to be part of the design team and provided Civil Engineering services for the Western Distributor Road Phase 2 road project linking Caltragh to the Balldoogan area of Sligo which will open up IDA lands.

The major road project backed by the IDA and the Department of Transport will see the construction of a three kilometre link road from Ballydoogan to the Caltragh interchange.

The Western Distributor Road Phase 2 comprises a new single carriageway south west of Sligo Town commencing at the Ballydoogan Road (WDR Phase 1) and terminating at the N4 Caltragh Interchange. The WDR Phase 2 joins on to the completed WDR Phase 1 which was an AtkinsRéalis project.

A no. of years ago AtkinsRéalis complete a traffic and Transportation project study for Sligo and this study recommended the implementation of a no.s of new  routes in and around Sliog these included the Sligo Inner Relief Route and the Western Distributor Route.

The scheme will improve access to the existing IDA Business Park at Finisklin and provide access to the proposed new IDA Business Park at Oakfield and zoned land in the area. The scheme includes a new 23 metre span bridge over the Dublin-Sligo railway.

The scheme also incorporates designated cycle tracks, footways and shared-use facilities, including new signalised crossings.
