Principal Bridge Inspections of Local Road Bridges in the North & East Region of County Cork & Principal Bridge Inspections of Local Road Bridges in the South & West Region of County Cork

The bridge team in the Cork office are currently undertaking the principal inspection and inventory gathering of 917 local road bridges throughout the entire County of Cork as part of two projects in the North & East region of County Cork and the South & West Region of County Cork for the client Cork County Council.

Due to the large quantity of bridges to be inspected there was a big variety of bridges including single and multi span masonry arches dating from the 1850s, reinforced concrete structures from the 1920s, composite steel and concrete structures from the 1950s and pre-stressed concrete beam bridges from more recent times. There were also a number of clapper beam structures which consisted of stone masonry slabs spanning short distances over masonry supports. These bridges are difficult to date as this construction type goes back to medieval times and continued to more recent times.
