Dublin Airport Watermain

Project Indigo Green involved the design, construction and commissioning of a new water supply and a new wastewater network for Irish Water.

This project supplies a number of new industrial developments (Project Indigo and Project Green) along the M3 corridor in the area around Clonee Co. Meath. AtkinsRéalis were appointed as Designer for the project (Civil, structural & MEICA) by the Contractor as part of the design and build contract.

The upgraded supply addresses future growth expectations for surrounding areas including Dunboyne and Bracetown. The project included extensive pipelaying works alongside the N3/M3, within private agricultural land and in collaboration with developers at end-user sites. The pipeline elements included:

  • 3060m of 560mm HPPE diameter trunk watermain;
  • 2170m of 450mm HPPE trunk main;
  • 2,080m of 355mm internal diameter trunk main;
  • A 260m of trenchless installation below the M3 motorway;
  • 400m 225mm ID gravity foul sewer;
  • 4315m of 140mm diameter HPPE foul rising main.

The contract also includes for the construction of a new 310l/s water pumping station (PS) to replace the existing Loughsallagh booster PS.

The PS replacement included all M&E Works associated with the design, supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of the new plant including, Pressure Reducing Valves, Flow Measurement, Telemetry, ESB substation, Control and SCADA.

Client issues

Improving the security of water and wastewater infrastructure for high-demand commercial customers.
Trenchless crossing under the M3 motorway.
Pumping station structure/layout changes as a result of post contract signing requirement to future proof the pumping station for future flows (up to 500 l/s).

AtkinsRéalis solutions and added value

A 3D model of Loughsallagh PS was created to demonstrate how the assets required for the future flows would be accommodated within the existing PS footprint.

Surge analysis was carried out, which demonstrated that a surge vessel could be avoid by creating a bypass arrangement. Value engineering solution.

Services provided

Services provided by AtkinsRéalis as part of the project included but were not limited to;

  • Pipeline design;
  • Surge analysis;
  • Structural design;
  • MEICA design.

Key benefits and success factors

Utilisation of pipeline, surge and MEICA specialists from across Ireland and the UK to ensure technical excellence.
